What is a legal GP?

When facing any dispute or issue you need to know:

  • Where you stand, and
  • What your options are.

Your Legal GP will help you assess and understand your options before you commit to paying expensive and unnecessary legal fees.

Problems can initially seem daunting and unmanageable. In the same way as your medical GP assesses your symptoms and guides to the help you need, Your Legal GP does this in a legal context. You may have several options open to you from negotiation or mediation to simply writing a letter and presenting evidence in a clear format.

Ultimately you may need a lawyer and a court process, and we can help with that too. But often issues can be resolved more quickly and cheaply out of court. You will usually achieve the same outcome but save time, money and stress.

These are some of our areas of expertise:

Lasting Powers of Attorney

It is highly recommended that everyone consider how they will be cared for, and their finances managed, if they lose capacity. Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) and Advance Directives are important legal documents, and Your Legal GP can prepare them for you. At a stressful, difficult time for your family and loved ones, it can help if you have given authority to someone close to make decisions on your behalf.

Divorce

A leading UK judge said that divorce should be viewed as a relationship problem rather than a legal one, and that every effort should be made to resolve differences out of court. The administrative process itself costs £582 and can take as little as 26 weeks. Some couples spend many thousands on legal fees simply because they cannot talk to one another.

Building disputes

These can arise due to lack of clarity at the specification stage, poor workmanship or missed payments for completed work. The legal fees incurred in resolving building disputes can be disproportionate to the value of the project. Courts insist that parties attempt to resolve their dispute out of court first. Your Legal GP offers mediation for this, a cheaper and quicker method of reaching resolution.

Mediation

Whatever your issue, mediation can be one of the most effective ways of resolving disputes. You remain in the driving seat as a professional mediator works with you and the other party to facilitate communication and find a mutually acceptable compromise. Significantly cheaper than the court process, mediation usually takes place over one or two days.

Educational negligence

If your child, or you, have been let down by an educational institution due to their negligence, you may be entitled to compensation in the form of corrective action or financial recompense. This can be an expensive, protracted and stressful process so talk to us about your options. Before going to tribunal, it is advisable to attempt alternative dispute resolution as the court pprocess is invariably longer and more expensive.

Boundary disputes

These occur when there is a disagreement between landowners or neighbours about the exact location of a boundary, be that a hedge, fence, path, or other demarcation. Land Registry title plans can be imprecise and may conflict with historic, physical boundaries such as walls. Boundary disputes may affect all kinds of properties including residential and commercial.

Legal allies, not anchors

We work with individuals, families, groups and businesses. Depending on the nature of your issue and the level of involvement you wish from us, we can give you high level direction and let you carry out the rest, or we can work with you throughout the process, from start to finish.

We are with you for as long as you need us, however, you are in the driving seat and not tied in to us in any way.

Lasting Power of Attorney

  • A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is one of the most important documents you will ever sign. Why? LPAs authorise someone you know and trust to make decisions about 1. your health and welfare and 2. your finances, without consulting you. They come into effect if you are no longer able to make you on decisions. In the case of a financial LPA you can also ask someone to act for you at any time.
  • We offer Fully Advised LPAs - this means that we explain the legal and practical implications of making someone your LPA in relation to your circumstances. We clarify the ramifications of your decision and explain the options available to you. It is as important for those who may act for you to understand their roles and we can assist you in this.
  • You will need a Certificate Provider to attest to your mental capacity at the time you make your LPA. This is a crucial aspect of making sure that your LPA is valid. We can be your Certificate Provider or advise someone else who you may elect to undertake this role.

"The Land Registry title was unclear, and I found myself trying to understand terms [and] obscure wording in extracts from deeds dated 1871 and other technical legal terms which left me feeling powerless. Graham at Your Legal GP was fantastic at looking at the situation and making practical suggestions as to how to resolve the issue, using legal remedies, but without a lengthy court battle."
