Medical negligence occurs when a person suffers some kind of harm due to substandard care from a medical professional which may either cause an injury or make an existing condition worse. There are several types of medical negligence including misdiagnosis, avoidable amputations, injuries at birth or medication errors:
Types of Medical Negligence
- Medical Misdiagnosis: A medical misdiagnosis claim is a legal option open to a person who believes that during their encounter with a health care professional they have received either a wrong, delayed or even missed diagnosis which has led to some form of harm.
- Avoidable Amputations: Having a part of your body amputated is a very serious medical intervention that is usually only indicated to prevent further serious illness from occurring. They have physical and psychological consequences that can cause long-term implications. Negligent amputations are considered a most serious preventable event in medical negligence.
- Birth Injuries: A birth injury claim relates to any act of negligence that affects either the mother or the child during pregnancy and/or childbirth. For a mother a birth injury might arise due to the failure to properly manage pre-eclampsia, or for a child a birth injury might arise due to a lack of oxygen in during labour causing a brain injury.
- Medication Errors: A medication error can cause signification physical and psychological harm and may even be fatal. It could relate to the wrong dose or drug on a prescription to the wrong dose administered by the healthcare professional. Either way it is a preventable error.
