Disability Discrimination
With Your Legal GP
Disability discrimination occurs when you are treated unfairly or placed at a disadvantage due to your disability. It can happen in many areas of life including employment, education, and transportation. It relates to any type of disability. Disability discrimination might be direct meaning that happens if you are treated less favourably because of your disability or indirect occuring when a policy or rule disadvantages you as a disabled person.
Examples of Disability Discrimination
- Employment discrimination: Being denied a job interview or promotion because you have disclosed your disability at the interview stage and the position was offered to someone else because of your disclosure
- Workplace disadvantages: Being made redundant due to disability-related absences or the need to take extra breaks at work due to your disability
- Reasonable adjustments: Not being offered reasonable adjustments to cater for your needs, for example if you need extra time to complete your exams due to your disability or if you require health breaks during your exam
- Victimisation: Being victimised (singled-out, picked on, unfairly challenged) after making a complaint in relation to failure to make reasonable adjustments to your workspace
Your Legal GP can help you decide how to resolve issues between you and the employer, education or service provider who has discriminated against you.
